The Formal Listening Series offers an intimate music experience in a formal setting.

Urban folk singer/songwriter Damien Jurado quietly built up one of the strongest catalogs on the indie scene, earning high critical praise yet somehow never quite getting his proper due. Nick Drake had a definite impact on much of his work, but Jurado modeled his career on more idiosyncratic, unpredictable figures like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed and Randy Newman--songwriters who followed their own muse wherever it took them, whether fans or critics enjoyed it or not. His independence was born at least in part from the influence of punk and one of the results was a concern for emotional authenticity that led him to delve into other people's lives instead of his own. Many of Jurado's best songs spun concise, literate tales of quiet, everyday despair which often earned him comparisons to short story writer Raymond Carver. But his story telling bent -- not to mention his ambivalence toward confessional material -- arose from a stinger grounding in traditional folk than spiritual compatriots like Elliot Smith or Cat Power.

THEE CONDUCTOR (record release show)
Jason Butler, the creative force behind Thee Conductor, has teamed up with an impressive selection of musicians for this open and collaborative art project which resulted in a curated collection of songs titled Cotton Tornado. Set to be released on October 20th via Sixgunlover Records, the album was co-produced and engineered by Justin Douglas of King Electric Recordings in Austin, Texas. The entire album is a bittersweet journey rooted in pop with well placed string, horn and vocal orchestration.

All songs on Cotton Tornado were written by Butler, who has previously released records alongside Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth), Bill Dolan (5ive Style, Sub Pop) and was co-writer for the Austin group Quien es, BOOM!. Rounding things out are the important embellishments made by vocal/creative perspectives of Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Kevin Shea (NYC), Jana Horn, A. Sinclair & many others. Look for many guests to appear at this live performance!
