Formed in Austin in 1994, The Gourds became one of the most beloved and unpredictable bands in American roots music, blending alt-country, bluegrass, folk, and honky-tonk into a sound that was as literary as it was rowdy. Led by the songwriting partnership of Kevin Russell and Jimmy Smith and rounded out by Claude Bernard, Max Johnston, and Keith Langford, the band spent nearly two decades touring relentlessly, earning a fiercely loyal following and a reputation as one of the most dynamic live acts in the Americana world.

After going on hiatus in 2013, the members have continued to pursue a variety of projects. Now, for a rare reunion performance, The Gourds return to the stage to celebrate the songs, stories, and joyful chaos that made them a cornerstone of the Texas roots scene and a cult favorite across the country.

Performing together only occasionally—often no more than once a year—this reunion at the historic Paramount Theatre will be an especially meaningful one. The concert comes just months before the Paramount temporarily closes in June 2026 for the Shine On restoration project, a nine-month effort to preserve and revitalize the 111-year-old theatre for the next century of Austin audiences.

Proceeds from the evening will help support the Shine On campaign, which will restore the Paramount to its 1930s grandeur while ensuring the theatre remains a vibrant home for artists and audiences for generations to come.

With the Paramount soon to go dark for restoration, this night promises to be one of the most memorable performances in the theatre’s modern history—a rare gathering of one of Austin’s most beloved bands inside one of the city’s most iconic cultural spaces.
