Friday
30th Anniversary!
1995, 91min/color, 35mm

Directed by: F. Gary Gray
Cast: Ice Cube, Chris Tucker, Nia Long, Tom Lister Jr. and Regina King

It’s impossible to overstate the impact F. Gary Gray’s FRIDAY has had on our popular culture. Four years after making his acting debut in sobering drama BOYZ IN THE HOOD, Ice Cube got to show his comedic side and further solidify his screen career. If you never made it to Phat Tuesdays at LA’s Comedy Store (and somehow never watched Def Comedy Jam on the free HBO in your hotel room), this movie likely introduced you to Chris Tucker and Bernie Mac. And yep, that’s future Oscar-winner Regina King. This iconic comedy has it all.

House Party
35th Anniversary!
1990, 100min/color, 35mm

Directed by: Reginald Hudlin
Cast: Kid ’n Play, Full Force, and Robin Harris

Hip hop duo Kid ‘n Play play a pair of high school friends trying to throw a raucous house party whilst avoiding trouble from bullies, the police and their parents. Written and directed by Reginald Hudlin based on his award-winning Harvard University student film, this box office smash grossed $26 million on a $2.5 million budget and was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 2022.

Black Auteur Film Festival

Founded by filmmakers Alex Chew and Ryan Darbonne, the Black Auteur Film Festival (BAFF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, empowering, and celebrating Black voices in cinema. The festival welcomes all audiences but focuses on empowering Black communities and amplifying underrepresented voices. BAFF also highlights the rich diversity across the diaspora, challenging monolithic narratives by showcasing films that reflect the broad spectrum of the Black experience. The festival stands as a platform for representation and dialogue, reinforcing the vital role of Black filmmakers and their continued contribution to shaping cultural landscapes.

The Festival:
Join us Saturday, June 21 for a showcase of wonderful films directed by Black Texans and curated by the Black Auteur Film Festival (BAFF).

Come to see which filmmaker wins Best of Fest and receives our $1,000 cash stipend! We’ll also have an IDEA PITCH CONTEST and raffle where all festival attendees can win up to $3,000 in prizes—including free movie tickets and filmmaking workshops.

After our Q&A with BAFF filmmakers, we’ll have a networking mixer in the AFS Cinema lobby.
