Duke Ellington’s

The Nutcracker Suite

The Paramount Theatre
Saturday, January 6, 2024

Doors: 6pm
Show: 7pm

Ballet Afrique, Austin’s only all-Black en pointe dance company, is excited to present Duke Ellington’s: The Nutcracker Suite in a 7 p.m. performance on January 6th, 2024 at The Paramount Theatre. The production, which is set in Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance period of the 1920s and 30s, promises to be a grand spectacle of opulence and a positively joyous treat for the entire family. The performance will take patrons on a journey of resilience as the talented ballerinas of Ballet Afrique tell the story of Claranette’s family’s resilience, triumphs, and magic through the Great Depression and amid Jim Crow, all set to the score of Duke Ellington. This production features special guest 'Shuronda Robinson', CEO of Austin Women's Magazine as Mother Ginger, and Chas Moore, CEO of Austin Justice Coalition as Rat King!

Carrying Hope - Donation Tickets This year, Ballet Afrique has launched a very special Gift of Black Girl Magic campaign. Through a partnership with Carrying Hope, a 501c3 nonprofit that provides shelter and support services to Texas foster youth, donors will be able to gift the magical experience of Ballet Afrique’s “Nutcracker” to children who need it most.

The first 100 tickets donated through the Gift of Black Girl Magic Campaign will be directed toward children who will spend their holidays in group homes and their caregivers.

“Youth in foster care who are living in local shelters, residential treatment centers, and group homes have typically spent much of their lives focused on survival. As a result, it’s a rarity for them to get to experience the arts,” said Kristin Finan, executive director of Carrying Hope. “By giving these youths the opportunity to attend ‘Duke Ellington’s The Nutcracker Suite,’ Ballet Afrique is not only creating a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the children in foster care who we serve but is also making an important and lasting first impression of what dance, and dancers, should look like on a major stage.”
